SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Police checkpoints targeting drunk drivers may be prohibited in Utah.

Republican Rep. David Butterfield of Logan says the checkpoints violate the constitutional protections against unreasonable searches. He also says they are ineffective at catching drunk drivers, and says charges stemming from a checkpoint can be difficult to prosecute.

The House is scheduled to debate Butterfield's House Bill 140 Thursday. The bill would prohibit police checkpoints except for fugitive searches, Amber Alerts, wildlife checks and the prevention of invasive species.

The bill passed a House panel earlier this month despite opposition from law enforcement groups and prosecutors.

Salt Lake County Sheriff Jim Winder says the checkpoints have reduced fatalities from drunk driving, especially in Utah's canyons and rural areas.

It is amazes me that the ones that are putting up a stink are the probably the ones that are scared to get caught. I don't need to be scared of a check point if I am not doing anything wrong. Stop me whenever you need to if it allows those that are doing things wrong to be taken off of the roads. Just knowing that there may be a check point can be a deterent.

Stopping people from having a good time isn't the issue, the issue is does your having a good time end up killing innocent people on the road. I think they need to be more vigilant in their efforts to keep the 90 Proof partiers off the roads.

Are you kidding? When someone chooses to put theirs and other's lives in danger by driving drunk, they need to be stopped! When you drive drunk, you are violating my right to be safe while on the road. DUI checkpoints make a difference. By driving drunk, you are breaking the law; and if you are stopped, how is that grounds for unlawful search?
