COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS Utah (ABC 4 News) – A burglary suspect Sunday may have been involved in another crime nearby.
And authorities now have an image of who this guy is.
Sunday, the suspect broke into the TJ Maxx store along Fort Union and 1300 East.
But police now suspect he may be involved in another burglary across the street.
“Prior to gaining entry into the safe he disabled the alarm system and the security cameras and the power," says Sgt. Mark Asklund.
It is similar to the method used to break into the Michael’s craft store in the same vicinity.
But at TJ Maxx little did the burglary suspect realize there was another security camera that was still working.
Police believe he didn't know that because he was very open with his identity.
“What he didn't realize is that this video footage was backed up to another server at an offsite location,” says Sgt. Asklund.
And that's how police got their first glimpse of the burglary suspect.
He's accused of coming through the roof and drilling a hole into the TJ Maxx store and grabbing money from the safe.
It's very similar to the Michael’s store robbery.
“Once he gets inside he cut a hole through the wall that accessed an electrical room that cut the phone lines, cut the power to the alarm system as well," says Lt. Justin Hoyal of the Unified Police Department.
But in that robbery he was never seen, the surveillance didn't work.
Police have a suspicion that he was at both places.
“The similarities make it seem to us they are related,” says Sgt. Asklund.
