OGDEN, Utah (AP) - An Ogden man who engaged in a shootout with police sent text messages to a friend during the standoff, including a final message saying, "Goodbye brother."
Preliminary autopsy results say Aaron Matthew Collier died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound early Sunday. The Standard-Examiner reports that Collier exchanged several text messages during the standoff with Desi Martinez who had also been in the home, hiding from the gunfire, before officers escorted him outside.
At the time they were texting each other, Collier was wounded in the house, while Martinez was in the back of a police car.
Martinez told the newspaper he urged Collier to hang in there, but that Collier seemed resigned to his fate.
Collier's distraught fiancée said she believes Ogden police overreacted. Stacee Chivers said Collier had been drinking and began complaining about the re-election of President Barack Obama.
