DRAPER, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police say a father who reported a near drowning of his 1-month old child later admitted to shaking the baby.
The baby died on Monday at Primary Children's Medical Center.
According to police, officers were dispatched to a report of a 1 month old baby that had reportedly drowned while being given a bath by the father, 24-year-old Mijail Alejandro Russell-Torres.
Police say the baby went into cardiac/respiratory arrest, and that officers and emergeny personnel performed CPR before the baby was flown to Primary Children’s Medical Center in critical condition.
Police say Draper officers conducted an investigation into the possibility of child abuse, and determined that the baby had sustained injuries consistent with “shaken baby syndrome”.
After the baby's death on Monday, Torres was arrested and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on suspicion of Murder.
Police said the case will be screened with the Salt Lake County District Attorney’s office.
