OREM, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Monday morning baby Jane and her parents Kara and Keven Cottle headed home from the hospital. Jane was born Saturday morning in the back of an ambulance; her grandfather helped bring her into the world.
Kara Cottle explains, “I thought I’d make it to the hospital cause not making it to the hospital only happens to people on TV.”
When contractions started coming on quick plans changed. "I literally went from one minute thinking we should call my parents to baby sit the two-year-old when we go to the hospital to the next minute I thought we should just grab a neighbor, and the next minute I thought we can have the paramedics baby sit her. I don't care I need an ambulance,” said Cottle.
While Kara called her parents, Keven called 9-1-1
Keven Cottle said, "The dispatcher she did a great job keeping me calm. She basically said don't try to stop the delivery...get ready."
Before Keven got into too much of a panic Kara's father showed up. A paramedic for 30 years David Forsythe had several deliveries under his belt and knew what to do. He jumped into the back of the ambulance and got ready to bring his granddaughter into the world.
Forsythe said, "I gloved up and all the sudden here comes this little head out."
Five minutes later it was all over.
"They say I delivered the baby, but moms deliver the baby and I’m just here to catch then and keep them from falling on the floor,” kidded Forsythe.
Modesty aside this grandpa, who's retiring at the end of the year, couldn't be happier.
“Probably the highlight of my career, delivering your own child or grandchild,” said Forsythe.
