THISTLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Utah County officials say a 21-year-old Orem man fell to his death on Tuesday night.

According to the Utah County Sheriff's Office, Ammon Mark Latham was hiking near the Thistle Slide area with a group of friends when he entered a nearby tunnel or pipe.

"There is a lot of people who know about it.  Kids like to play in it.  It's just kind of a mystery to them," said Sgt. Vernal Shepard of the Utah County Sheriff's Department.

Utah County officials say one end of the pipe can be accessed on foot, while there is a 80-100 foot drop at the other end.

A female companion in the group told Utah County Sheriff's deputies that she heard a loud scream and a thud sound.

A medical helicopter was called in at about 11:45 p.m.

Emergency officials found Latham with head trauma, broken bones and significant neck injuries, according to Utah County deputies.

Latham was flown to the University of Utah Medical Center in critical condition, but later died from his injuries.

Sheriff's officials say there was a clearly labeled "no trespassing" in the area, although curiosity seekers often go to there.
