OREM, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Police say an Orem doctor was accused of sex abuse and lewdness after a patient claimed he showed inappropriate videos to her and performed unnecessary examinations on her.
According to police, the 60-year-old alleged victim reported the claims to investigators on Wednesday.
"She was receiving some vaginal exams from Dr. David Hillam when she was going in for problems totally unrelated," Sgt. Craig Martinez of the Orem police department said.
Police said the woman claimed Doctor David R. Hillam showed her some inappropriate videos while she was at his office.
"All of the videos were sexual in nature and it was making her very uncomfortable," Sgt.Martinez said.
When Dr.Hillam came to the police station for questioning, detectives found the X-rated video still on his cellphone.
"What I can tell you is we do know what videos he showed her," Sgt. Martinez said. "We have seen them."
Police said for three years the 60-year old woman kept returning to the health clinic for appointments with Dr. Hillam. Yetshe didn't file a complaint until two years ago.
"(She was) just being an older naïve woman that trusts her doctor thinking that everything is on the up and up," Sgt. Martinez says. "But it took him showing her these videos and her to come in for her to say this is not okay."
On Friday, Dr Hillam was fired from his position by the University of Utah Medical Center. A spokesman told ABC4 News that they interviewed staff and Dr. Hillam and felt "comfortable" the firing was appropriate.
After a two week investigation, police said Dr. Hillam was arrested and booked Monday night.
Hillam was booked into the Utah County Jail, where he faces 4 counts of class B misdemeanor Lewdness, and 3 counts of 2nd degree felony Forcible Sexual Abuse.
Police asked that if there were any other patients that were being seen by Dr. Hillam and might be compelled to report a similar crime to call Orem dispatch at (801) 229-7070.
