SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – A 22-year old woman is facing felony child abuse charges after allegedly shaking her baby.
Kayla Usrey faces two second degree felony charges.
In charging documents, doctors at Primary Children’s Hospital detected problems with the baby after it was admitted.
“Leg twitching, eye deviation and facial twitch” were symptoms detected by doctors.
“This was a result of a violent rotational shaking of the baby's head,” says Salt Lake District Attorney Sim Gill.
Usrey even admitted to police that she shook the baby two times. The court documents stated that Usrey told police the baby wouldn't stop crying.
“These injuries were such that there was a likelihood of substantial risk of injury and death,” Gill says. “I think sometimes we forget the level of caution and care we have to take as a parent and care providers.”
