Microsoft takes offense in $1B antitrust trial

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Microsoft resumes its defense Tuesday in a $1 billion anti-trust trial in federal court in Salt Lake City.
Utah's Novell Inc. claims Microsoft was protecting its monopoly when it left the WordPerfect writing application without a way to work on Windows 95.
Microsoft's Bill Gates countered last week that Novell showed little interest in pushing WordPerfect and never complained about being left behind.
Microsoft attorneys say they will call former Microsoft executive Bob Muglia to the stand Tuesday. They say Muglia will testify that the development tools Novell used for WordPerfect threatened to crash new Windows technology.
On Monday, Microsoft lawyers say a former WordPerfect product manager testified that many top Novell executives were opposed to buying the rights to WordPerfect in the first place.
