SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 57-year-old man has been convicted of murder in the shooting death of a man at a Salt Lake City park last year.

Francisco Alverez awaits sentencing Feb. 4 after being found guilty in the May 2011 death of 29-year-old Jorge Veracruz.

Prosecutors say Alverez got into an argument with a group of acquaintances and shot Veracruz three times at Riverside Park.

Defense attorneys argue that Alverez feared he would be robbed after the argument broke out and acted to protect himself.

The shooting occurred in broad daylight when Little League teams were playing. About 500 people were in the park at the time.

The Deseret News reports Alverez was convicted of murder for intentionally running over David Brigham in Ogden in 1979. He was paroled in 1986.
