SPANISH FORK, Utah (AP) - A man who once confessed to killing a Millard County sheriff's deputy but was acquitted of murder has been sentenced to up to 10 years in prison on lesser charges.
Judge Donald Eyre told Roberto Miramontes Roman at sentencing Wednesday that "at least in my opinion, you got away with murder."
Roman initially described to police how he'd shot and killed 37-year-old deputy Josie Greathouse Fox on Jan. 5, 2010. But his defense lawyer said Roman had been threatened and changed his story after the threat was gone.
Roman testified the fatal shots were fired by Fox's brother, who was found dead a few months after the shooting.
A jury in August found Roman not guilty of the killing, but convicted him of felony evidence tampering and unlawful gun possession.
