SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Unprecedented.
This how the LDS Church is referring to its Easter weekend social media blitz.
YouTube.
Facebook.
Twitter.
Google plus.
Pinterest.
If you're on any of these this weekend, you may well see ads from the LDS Church.
In fact, the Church tells ABC 4 that anywhere from 10 to 50 million people may eventually view all or part of these special videos.
Ron Wilson, who handles internet and advertising matters for the LDS Church, told ABC 4,
"We think it’s important to use technology to get the message out about the restored gospel, about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."
Starting Friday and going through the weekend, when you click on certain YouTube videos, you will see paid ads from the LDS Church.
Church officials say this is a first for YouTube and for them.
Wilson says,
“We're always looking to see what's out there, what's coming, what can be used."
Wilson also says these videos are meant to enhance Easter for some people and as reminders that Mormons are Christians and worship Jesus Christ.
But with Mitt Romney poised to become the first Mormon presidential nominee of a major American party, some have questioned the timing of this social media blitz.
So ABC 4 asked the LDS Church if there was any connection.
ABC 4 News: "Some people might look at this and think, ok, this is related to Mitt Romney running for president."
Wilson: “We’ve definitely had those questions and I can assure you it has nothing to do with any politician, anything to do with politics.”
