SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – ABC 4 News is learning another big name is headed to City Creek. In just a matter of weeks, Apple will announce plans for a new store there. But that begs the question – What happens now to the Apple store at the Gateway Mall?
Exciting days at the Apple Gateway store, may be a thing of the past.
"Apple is making a commitment to City Creek," said Brandon Fugal, Executive Vice President Coldwell Banker Commercial.
Brandon Fugal tells ABC 4 Reporter Brian Carlson Apple is accepting a major deal to open a new store at City Creek. Through other sources Carlson confirmed that deal includes five years free rent.
“It's unprecedented," said Fugal.
So when Apple goes to City Creek - what's next for the Gateway Mall? Carlson called Apple and asked them “What are you going to do?”
They replied "We have not made an announcement."
So Carlson went to the Boyer Company who handles Apple's lease at the Gateway. They told Carlson their president, Jake Boyer, answers those questions and he wasn't available.
"I'm not sure what his schedule is," said Boyer assistant.
So Carlson emailed Apple Blogger Gary Allen, who tracks company buzz around the world. He said he it's possible Apple could keep both stores. But that's not usually how the company works.
In an email to Carlson he said only two pair of stores are that close to one another: two stores in Glendale, CA are within 600 feet of one another in different shopping malls, and two stores in Palo Alto, CA are within 3,800 feet of one another.
The Gateway and City Creeks stores would be about a little over 3,000 feet apart.
So will the Apple Gateway store survive? People in the know won't say. But the odds aren't in Gateway's favor.
