SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Keeping cool when the temps reach 100 degrees is not always as easy as sunscreen and shade, sometimes it requires something a bit more powerful.

Marianne Klingler needs the help of her air conditioner to keep her home and her large family safe from the summer heat. "With so many people in the house it gets hot really, so it's nice to know our air conditioner will be working,” said Klingler.

She's confident it will work because her air conditioner gets regular tune-ups once a year.

Justin Merrill with Whipple Service Champions was servicing Klingler’s conditioner. He said, “A lot of people don't realize that their air conditioners, and their furnace for that matter, are just like a car. You know you need your oil changed in your car. It's a machine so as it runs as much as they do run in the summer it has a lot of electrical/mechanical components that will wear down over time."

Too keep cool but keep the electricity bill at a reasonable rate experts suggest 78 or 79 degrees.

"There isn’t magic number really,” said Merrill. “It's whatever people are comfortable at. If you're keeping your house at 65 or 60 degrees it's going to cost you as sure a lot of people who like to keep their houses that cool have discovered."
