SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Teachers would be prohibited from instructing students about contraceptives, homosexuality or premarital sex under a bill that has passed the Utah House.

Republican bill sponsor Rep. Bill Wright of Holden says students should be taught that abstinence is the only way to prevent sexually-transmitted diseases or pregnancy.

Wright says lawmakers need to make it clear that an abstinence-only curriculum is the only acceptable method for sexual education.

House Bill 363 passed 45-28 Wednesday.

Democratic Rep. Brian King of Salt Lake City says lawmakers are naïve to think most teenagers will remain chaste before marriage. Instead, schools should encourage abstinence but also help students understand the dangers of sexual activity and how to protect themselves.

King says the fear and ignorance of lawmakers hurts teenagers by withholding important information.

My God, we really do live in an effed up state. Too many parents do NOT talk to their kids about protecting themselves against STD's and pregnancy. This is the most rediculous thing I have heard, let's all pretend our children do everything we tell them to do and they never do anything we ask them not to do. Open your eyes Utah law makers, just because you do not teach about it doesn't mean it will not happen. Just now most kids won't know how to protect themselves from a nasy STD or the reponsibility of being a parent. I hope you're ok with either raising your grandchildren when your kids can't or willing to watch them die slowly and painfully because they caught something particularly nasty like AIDs, or both. Did any of you think about the families that WANT their children to take sex ed in schools? No? Why am I not surprised? You only cater to the religious in this backwards single minded state who all believe that their kids turds don't stink because they are Young Women/Young Men presidents in their ward and were 'chosen by God'. Get your heads outta your rear ends and look at the world the way it really is.

Maybe the Utaw lawmakers should require all teenage girls to carry a firearm in plain sight. That oughtta keep those damn boys away from them. What a backwater state we live in.
