SALT LAKE CITY – (ABC 4 news) - The roads Sunday didn't look too bad, but by Christmas Eve morning, they could be looking a lot worse. Ron Holt decided to fill up his truck and make the trip to Las Vegas tonight.
"I'm getting out of town, before the snow storm comes. On our way up here, we heard it was supposed to snow really bad, so we're like, we're getting out of here," Ron said.
With overnight snow in the forecast, Steven Winward with the Utah Highway Patrol was worried.
"Normally tomorrow is a busy travel day. People going to see relatives and family," explained Lieutenant Winward.
As for last minute shoppers, Winward has a word of advice.
"If you don't need to travel, it's probably best to stay home."
Last minute shopper Ryan says that regardless of the snow, he is going to brave it out.
"We're definitely going to be driving all over," said Ryan.
"If there's a lot of snow, we're probably going to be responding to a lot of crashes," said Lieutenant Winward.
“It seems everyone forgets how to drive when the snow comes, so I'll definitely take some very good precautions, just for the safety of our kids," Ryan explained.
But if staying in bundled next to the fireplace isn't your cup of tea make sure you have the necessary winter adjustments made to your car.
"Make sure the cars prepared, that they have snow tires. … Drive slow."
Also, a good new addition to Utah roadways, a new sign to help drivers who get in fender benders.
“They do have new signage now to go to the nearest off-ramp if you can, that reduces secondary crashes," said Lieutenant Winward.
The Utah Highway Patrol wants one thing for Christmas - safe holiday travel for everyone.
"Obviously losing a loved one is bad, but losing one on the holiday is even worse," said Lieutenant Winward.
