FARMINGTON, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A search and rescue crew was called out Wednesday after a father and three young boys never return from a hike at Steed Canyon. The hiking party was located Wednesday morning.
“We couldn't figure out where the trail was and we took a wrong turn and then things got a little complicated,” said Sam Bradford, 10.
On Monday the two brothers and cousin set out with their dad for a one-night camping trip in, but lost the trail. That wasn't all that went wrong.
“The trail was really hard to follow and then two of the boys got sick and so we had to stop,” said Peter Bradford, the dad and uncle. “There’s no way to contact people to let them know we're on our way down.”
The family had plenty of camping equipment, but did run out of water. But with two vomiting boys, Peter made the decision to pitch a tent and rest up an extra night before making their way down the canyon. He said he knew the boys’ moms might be worried.
“He's gotten stuck over night unexpectedly before so I wasn't as worried as I might have been,” said Michelle Bradford, Peter’s wife. “But it definitely got to a point today where it was time to call the sheriff’s office and get some help to look for them.”
The sheriff’s office sent out search and research and an AirMed helicopter and found the party-- first bringing the boys in to get medical checks and going back later for the dad.
Asked if the boys learned any lessons out there--all agree on one. ”I think instead of eating all the food at once Id save some for later,” said Max Klingler, 10.
“We got pretty hungry,” said Sam.
