SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert has announced his plan for ensuring 66 percent of Utah's adult population has some sort of post-secondary degree or certification by 2020.
The goals announced Monday at the Governor's Annual Education Summit include reaching 90 percent proficiency in 3rd, 6th and 8th grade reading and math, and having a 90 percent high school graduation rate.
The plan also calls for 13 percent of Utahns holding a board-approved certification, 14 percent with an associate's degree, 28 percent with a bachelor's degree and 11 percent with a graduate degree.
To pay for the plan, state school board members plan to request more K-12 per-pupil funding.
Commissioner Dave Buhler says the Utah higher education system will ask lawmakers for another $20 million per year, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.
