SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Gov. Gary Herbert has appointed David Gladwell to serve as the new chair of the Utah Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission.

Gladwell has been a member of the board since 2011. He was elected to the state House in 1996 and to the state Senate in 2000.

Gladwell replaces Dr. Richard Sperry, who will continue to serve on the board.

The department administers state liquor laws and operates a statewide network of state stores that sell alcohol beverages, except beer containing less than 4 percent alcohol by volume, which is sold in grocery and convenience stores.

Herbert announced the appointment Thursday in a statement.
