PROVO, Utah (AP) - Frontier Airlines says it will discontinue flights to and from Provo after Jan. 7.
Frontier Airlines spokeswoman Lindsey Carpenter declined to give details Friday about why the company stopped service, citing "competitive reasons."
But Provo Mayor John Curtis said in a statement that it had to do with a reduction in Frontier's fleet of smaller aircraft.
The airline began offering daily flights between Denver and Provo Municipal Airport in June 2011. Curtis says the company had been using a 99-seat jet and announced earlier this year that it would switch to a 140-seat Airbus, but has since changed course.
Curtis says the decision to suspend flights was disappointing, but called it a "temporary setback" and says the city will continue to look at other airlines that might service Provo.
