SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Former Boy Scout leader Gerald Wayne Burgie is now sitting in a Texas prison.

That information comes from his former neighbor in Santa Clara.

Burgie was one of three Utahans listed by the Boy Scouts as a child molester.

Back in 1984, Burgie was convicted of child sex abuse but was given probation and paid a fine.

"No he never said anything about that,” says his former neighbor Monty Blake. “All he said was the different jobs that he done, that he was a scout leader. He never said anything about what happened.

Blake and Burgie lived next door at one time in Santa Clara. But in 2007 police came knocking at Burgie’s home.

Burgie was soon convicted of possession of child pornography and federal court records show that he was sentenced to five years in prison. The court information did not disclose which prison he was sent to. But the federal Bureau of Prisons lists a 73-year old Gerald Burgie housed at the Federal Medical Center in Massachusetts.

The facility offers medical treatment for prisoners. And it makes since according to his former neighbor.

"He told me he has cancer,” Blake says. “He was convicted of child pornography and said he made a really bad mistake and got caught for it."

As for the other two Utah men named by the Boy Scouts little is known about Erick Hacking and Leroy Richins.

The Boy Scout files claim Hacking was convicted of child sex abuse and placed on probation and paid a fine.

But there is no information available from court records.

A spokesperson for the state courts says many of the older files have been archived and will take several days to retrieve them.

As for Richins, the Boy Scout files never indicated he was charged with a crime.

As for Burgie's former neighbor he didn't know about his boy scout secrets until ABC 4 News told him.

"It just makes me even more shocked and basically glad that he doesn't live next to us anymore,” says Blake.

We must protect our children from sex abuse. Please join us at www.protectmasschildren.org and support strong mandatory sentences for sex offenders.

MORE and MORE and MORE sex abusers getting caught (did I say MORE??). And has anyone noticed MOST have been caught in the PAST and barely slapped on the hands. Someday the justice system will start taking this more seriously (once someone prefers 'kids', they ALWAYS will, and DOES).
