SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – A fiery blaze has left a Salt Lake apartment complex without power and running water. People at the Fountain View Apartments woke up to intense flames spreading quickly to the top floor.

Bert Ekstrom heard a ruckus outside, but at first he thought it was just his neighbors being loud. He said, “I went outside and sure enough, flames were shooting up 20 feet in the air.”

“It was a pretty big blaze up there. It was a giant bon fire if you want to get an idea”, said Dave Burton, another resident.

“I heard someone banging on all the doors downstairs, and I didn't know what it was, so I opened the door and all this smoke barreled inside,” Ekstrom recalled.

Fire investigators say the blaze started in a boiler room. They say that's where all the utility connections are located. The fire has left 35 people in a bind for the next couple of days. Many are staying with family members, while repairs are made.

Jeane Lambourne said luck was by their side, but now it’s a waiting game. “Until they get everything back up,” she said.

The Red Cross is helping those who don’t have anywhere else to go.
