SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC 4 News) – Jansen Young tells ABC 4 News she has been on a roller coaster of emotions since her boyfriend Jon Blunk took a bullet to save her life inside the Aurora Colorado movie theater.
“I look at that and know that I would do the same thing if the tables had been turned and if I would have been able to take the bullet for him I would have,” Young said.
Young had been dating Blunk since October 2011. She said she is healing from Blunk’s loss with each passing day.
“I want everyone in Utah to know that I’m really grateful for their prayers and their help,” Young said. “It does help to know people care.”
Blunk leaves behind two young daughters from an estranged marriage. The girls are 2 and 4-years old.
Kay Blunk, Jon’s grandmother in Texas, said he was a loving father who was committed to his country.
“He wanted to die in battle and unfortunately the battle chose him,” Blunk said.
Blunk’s 4-year-old daughter can’t understand why her father is gone.
“She keeps calling his cell phone so she can hear her daddy’s voice,” Blunk added.
Young hopes the memories of gunshots in a smoke filled theater will fade, but she’ll always remember the man who sacrificed his life to save hers.
“I’ll never forget this,” Young said. “This will always probably be the most prominent act of love I’ll ever have in my life.”
