PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 News) – A private email, from a woman in Price, asking Mormons to fast and pray for presidential candidate Mitt Romney is now being read by people across the country.
Fasting is something the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches its members to do once a month. Mormons believe by fasting and praying together they can draw special powers from God.
Right now an email asking people to fast for Mitt Romney is going viral. The email is not endorsed by the LDS Church, but from a voter frustrated with President Obama.
It reads, in part:
“I am asking you to join me and my family on Sunday Sept. 30 by fasting and praying for Mitt Romney. That he will be blessed in the debates, which will be held Oct. 3rd.”
Logan Williams said his mother wrote it.
“I think that’s where she’s coming from, wanting her family to know what her beliefs are and what she feels is best for this country,” said Logan Williams, son of email author.
ABC 4’s Brian Carlson spoke to her over the phone from Price and she can’t believe her email has gone nationwide.
“It wasn’t with that intent… if you look at the Bible or the scriptures, you see that things were changed and terrible things didn’t happen because of righteous people and I believe that there are a lot of righteous people in this nation,” said Mona Williams, email author.
“And you’re hoping they join you in praying for Mitt Romney?” Carlson asked.
“Absolutely,” she said.
One of those people is BYU student is Taylor Frank. He got the email and began spreading it to the family and friends across campus.
“I sent it to a lot of people,” said Taylor Frank, BYU student.
“Being a college student I don’t really have the funds to fund a politician or send money, this is something I can do that comes from my heart,” he said.
Carlson went to BYU to see if the message is working.
“Would you fast for Mitt?” Carlson asked one student.
“Yes, I would,” she said.
“I don’t know, I don’t think I would,” said another.
“Yah, I would. I think he needs all the help he can get,” said a third student.
Williams is hoping enough people will join her fast for Romney so that “help” will come from a higher power.
