SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Utah State Representative John Dougall won a tight race for the GOP Utah State Auditor nomination.

Dougall beat out incumbent auditor Auston Johsnon III by 53 to 47 percent with more than 96 percent of precincts reporting.

Dougall has served in the Utah House since 2003, and was the sponsor of 2011's controversial House Bill 477, a measure that sailed through committees and both state houses before public outcry led to a recall. The bill restricted media and public access to legislative communication records.

Johnson is a CPA who has served as state auditor since 1995.
