It matters not that the dog was not micro chipped or licensed. The dog had obviously been cared for and was not in such a physical condition that he had to be put down right then. Sick or injured dogs get picked up for a variety of reasons and there should ALWAYS be a waiting period to allow an owner to claim the animal, absent critical medical conditions. Very poor job. I would be royally devastated if my dog, who is lame, got picked up and put down all in the span of a few hours. Just appalling!!! Talk to a lawyer sir, or contact rescue groups. If the rules need to be changed, perhaps you can be part of the effort to make sure this does not happen to another dog (and dog owner) again.

Mcgyver22 I think you need to check your facts first. I have been to this animal shelter numerous times and I KNOW that none of these people are bad. They have all been there a long time and NONE of them are there for they pay of the job(because I can tell you know its not that much), they are there for their compassion of animals. If that dog had been there for "months" then the neighbor had to have known. This dog was NOT microchiped or properly registered.By the vets standards it was probably on a better path but if you see a dog that you have no history on and the condition looks really bad then can they really be to blame?

I think there are good cops and bad cops, I think there are good people who work in shelters and bad ones. The ones that worked in THIS shelter need to be fired, fined, and make restitution to this man for the loss of his dog. And the neighbor?!! Don't even get me started on the neighbor! I found a little dog friday night coming back from the dog park here in St. George and I've listed her on craigslist, Facebooked her like crazy, took her to the vet to see if she's chipped and taught her how to sit. She's pooped in my house twice (I think she's still trying to figure out my schedule and I've learned that she LOVES to chase the laser light. Then I drove the neighborhood where I found her and asked around, knocked doors. I did CALL the shelter and tell them I had found a dog, described her and left my number but there was NO way I was going to turn her over to them. I'll foster her and then the rescue I work with will find her a good home in time. I think her owners dumped her truthfully, but that certainly shouldn't be a death sentence for her. Animals NEED us to be their voice and they will love us back 10 times over. I laughed so hard tonight from her playing. There was just too much that wasn't right in this story and I Hope this man gets JUSTICE for his furry friend.

This is horrible! What a tragedy that the neighbor didn't bother asking around before taking this dog to the shelter. My little guy ran out after a wind storm blew part of the fence down and a lady visiting from Texas was kind enough to pick him up and find out where he lived and no, he didn't have his collar on, that's beside the point. This so called "Humane" society should be checked into! Bogus!! This poor man!

This is HEARTBREAKING!!! I was wondering the same about the collar and a Tag but this Dog isn't some wild rat out of the Toilet! It's a Golden Retriever. Really? You don't lose time putting down an animal without waiting if someone comes forward???? If the Neighbor pays that much attention and can't lose time to go out of his way to take this pup to the pound, he obviously must've seen that his Neighbor had been nursing a Dog like him! He couldn't have asked around??? Sounds like a rather personal issue here. That Neighbor needs to be euthanized!!!! This story just breaks my Heart! and so much Humanity for the Humane Society! Freak my house would be a zoo if it was for saving a Pet!

I would like to ask the owner WHY HIS DOG DID NOT HAVE A COLLAR WITH TAGS OR A MICROCHIP???? Or was the Humane Society so irresponsible that they ignored tags and did not call the owner before euthanizing him. This story is a tragedy!

"Humane" Society seems to be a misnomer.
