SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – Restaurants are running out of tomatoes.  A deep freeze in Mexico, Arizona, and Florida, where most of our produce is grown has wiped out many crops.  At Granto’s in downtown, they are thinly slicing tomatoes.  They only have one box left of the juicy fruit.

Jessica Fields, a customer says, “it’s a sad thing for a sandwich.  It makes it look less appetizing.”

“It’s going to be kind of hard with that flavor not there and texture,” says Shawn Guckaun, a customer.

Supplies of tomatoes and other produce are expected to be limited for the next month.

“Tomatoes they are so refreshing, and crisp.  They make everything look so beautiful, because of the color,” says Fields.

It’s a color you’re going to be paying a pretty penny for at the grocery store as the supply dwindles.

“Plant your own garden, and start canning all of that good stuff,” says Fields.

“I have a friend who just moved here from Japan.  He went to the store with me, and he said food in America is free compared to what he gets in Japan,” says Guckaun.

“You know it is what it is.  We all like our fresh veggies, but not every one got hit so maybe it’s time to try a few new vegetables that we haven’t tried before,” says Anne Loscher, a customer.

People will have to possibly try a new sandwich at Granto’s.  It will have to be one without a ripe, red tomato in the center.

“It’s kind of a staple in a sandwich,” says Guckaun.

“I guess you’re going to have to live without them for awhile,” says Fields.

Experts say this freeze is the worst they’ve seen in 60 years.  They expect produce prices to fall back to normal ranges in a month.
