DAVIS COUNTY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - With 60 degree temperatures expected this weekend, mosquitoes are going to be coming out of hibernation so Davis County wants to stop the pests before they attack.

They've already got crews out checking tree holes, crevasses in trees where water can gather and create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Spencer Hart works for the Davis County Mosquito Abatement District. He said, "The mosquitoes that grow out of the tree holes are what cause dog heart worm and so we'll get cases from vets and we'll go to that neighborhood and we'll check those trees."

There are about 800 tree holes in Davis County that are checked every year and treated with pesticide, but there's much more ground to cover once the weather gets warmer.

Gary Hatch, Director of the Davis County Mosquito Abatement District explained, "In a normal year we'll treat about 7,000-10,000 acres in water and for adult mosquitoes with aircraft about 150,000-190,000."

Believe it or not many mosquito species, and most larvae, can live through the freezing temperatures of winter.

“They’ll get into an attic, or a barn, an overpass and hibernate over the winter,” said Hatch.

That’s why it’s important for all homeowners to look out for possible breeding grounds on their property.

“This time of year you want to start eliminating standing water from around your home, clear out containers, many will be holding water, drying them out, putting them away,” said Hatch. “Make sure those type of habitats are gone.”
