TAYLORSVILLE, Utah (ABC 4 News) On the day of David Phan's funeral, the teen's family speaks out on the loss of their son and the root of what may have tormented him.

An excerpt from the family's statement reads:

"David was an adored son, beloved by his close knit parents, older brother, and large extended family. David's home life was full of support and unconditional love. His parents are devastated to have lost their young son who rarely left their side. Many of his peers and members of the community have confirmed that David was an amazing student and extraordinary friend."

The statement goes on to address the problem of bullying that deeply affect David:

"David shielded his parents from the horror he was facing and his negative experiences at Bennion Jr. High. The last few days have been an absolute living nightmare to learn that he was bullied in school where he was supposed to be in a safe learning environment. It is time for us to turn the hate David endured by bullies into a learning experience to strengthen a divided community. Let us not deny the numerous accounts that David was a victim of serious bullying at school. Allow his family and friends the ability to heal by us all taking accountability and to move towards conversations and practices that will enable us to prevent other children from enduring this unbearable pain."

The family says they plan on meeting with school administrators to set up an anti-discrimination safe zone for students and other ways to curb bullying.

An account at Wells Fargo has been set up by the family for donations to go towards anti-bullying education and outreach.

@jeffallen783, "merely bullying"...really? If you can so readily dismiss the impact of being bullied on a child, then you represent the reasons why these children feel like they have no one to turn. It does not have to be sexual to be unbearably painful. Your conspiracy theory that it has to be more because merely bullying is not enough reason for a kid to take his life is NOT a message that should be given to kids who endure or practice bullying. Sorry, repost because I hit submit too soon.

Everyone keeps saying it was bullying. I wonder if it wasn't sexual harassment. Sexual harassment is a federal crime and if it was harassment then the student perpetrators, the school, and the school district are going to have a lot more questions to answer than if it was merely "bullying."

I can't believe abc4 News deleted my comment just because what I said was true and that I'm a minority! -.- Anyway, I wanted to say I'm sorry for this family to lose their loved one. I'm sorry that this had happened to this kid. My deleted comment was that the school administrators will not care nor will they take action unless you are Caucasian. If you are minority, they ignore all reports or complaints that you made. I have never been bullied before but when I was in Elementary - High School, I have been discriminated and I'm still facing that to this day. When this incident happened, all of a sudden they denied that they never heard him complaining about being bullied in school just so they can get away with it. No wonder there's a Virgina Tech incident that happened thanks to people like school administrators and bullies. Stuff like this can be prevented if they listen and take action immediately before thing get worst but they (the administrators) do not care. Bullies are nothing but a bunch of cowards and low-life to the society.
