Curtis Allgier due back in 3rd District Court

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An inmate charged with killing a Utah State Prison guard is due back in court for a discussion about mental exams.

Curtis Allgier's lawyers have been arguing that the inmate needs to be unshackled in a conference room for a battery of psychological tests.

Prison authorities, however, say Allgier is dangerous and unstable. They won't agree to unshackle him outside his cell.

Third District Court Judge Paul Maughan (MAWN') has said he expects both sides to work out a compromise.

Allgier is scheduled to appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Allgier has pleaded not guilty to the 2007 killing of Corrections Officer Steven Anderson. Authorities say the inmate grabbed the guard's gun and shot him during a medical visit outside of prison.
