SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A political painting is stirring up emotions across America. It's an artist's expression of what's happening on capital hill.

The painting is of President Obama stepping on the constitution. It has sparked controversy nationwide, but the artist is from right here in Utah.

In a Youtube video he said,”This man represents every man, woman, and child who is an American.”

A man sitting on a park bench looks down troubled about something. The artist behind it is Jon McNaughton from Provo. He added America stands on the precipice of disaster. “It’s an artist's interpretation of his political feelings,” said Salt Lake artist, Travis Tanner.

James Madison stands next to Obama asking him to stop. Dollar bills and other documents are scattered on the ground.

Tanner said controversy gets people moving. “It's good to have discussion and discourse about issues. We live in a country where we're free to do that and it's great, unfortunately there's not enough art like this in America anymore,” he commented.

He also pointed out it's also an artist’s way to survive. “A lot of artists are just like everyone else. There is a point where you have to paint things that are going to sell,” Tanner said.

Who is that guy standing on the piece of garbage in the front right of the picture? Why doesn't that guy sitting on the bench pick up some of that money floating around rather than sitting there looking all sad? I don't get it.

This is manipulative tripe that appeals to emotions, not FACT. If the artist was interested in fairness and not partisan b.s., why are only Democrats portrayed applauding? Even Nixon is given a "pardon." Unbelievable crap, but my, how they lap it up... And by the way, srbeck, it is not just YOUR country. It's MINE too.

It is truly funny how just because this painting has Obama in it it's racist! When are people going to STOP playing the race card this is getting really old ! If this was a conservative person you would not hear a peep ! All persons but one is a president & I guess its racist because Obama is black ? Really people get over yourselves ! Personally I Love The Picture as it speaks to me !

To stereotype the typical Utah citizen is not necessary..I grew up in Loma, Colorado and always thought Mormons were a little on the odd side..Now I realize you're all imbred racists..that can't comprehend much..but you do make good cheese..useless otherwise...art..

Think about it...this is art in its true form. An artist, whether it be a musician or painter, gives of himself/herself without demanding anything in return, except for an emotional response. In this case, Jon has tapped into many Americans that have a conscience. The applause for this picture is deafening...Hats off to you, Jon.

Agreed; very graphic and stirs emotions. However, there are many of us who would have depicted the congressional majority members stepping on the constitution rather than Obama.

First time I saw this it hit home. It is a true and accurate portrayal of what is happening to America, to MY country. It provokes a deeply emotional response as it depicts almost perfectly my feelings. Thanks to the artist.

He has the right to his point of view and I hope that he sells many prints. Its graphically displays what is happening to our country.
