RIVERTON, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Riverton city leaders are responding to parents pleading to protect their children from a road with no crossing guard.

It stands at 13400 South 5000 West. Children as young as 5-years-old would be required to cross 5 lanes without a crossing guard.

The mix-up took place between the Jordan School District who accidentally marked the route as in Herriman, as a result Riverton City leaders didn't learn about the needed crossing guard until a week before school started.

Stephanie Duke contacted ABC 4 Monday to share her concerns about her 9-year-old daughter who would have to walk across the intersection.

Duke says Riverton's mayor, Bill Applegarth, called her after the story aired to engage in a length conversation about her concerns.

The following day, Tuesday, he monitored the crosswalk to personally assist the children.

Finally Friday he will hire a crossing guard to ensure the children's safety as they pass.

Duke is thankful for the support from her city.

Bev Wasden and his cohorts at the Jordan School District earn about $175,000 per year for pushing a pencil. My wife's visiting teacher earns almost $80,000 as a secretary for the district. And they cannot afford a crossing guard at a dangerous intersection? Where are their priorities? It is not with the children. They can easily pay for a crossing guard by cutting their wasteful pay by just a few percentage points.
