Chevron to pay $1.8 million to Utah in settlement

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Chevron has paid the state of Utah $1.8 million as part of a settlement stemming from the oil company getting money from a fund it wasn't supposed to use.

The Utah Attorney General's office says Chevron collected money from a state fund set up to help oil companies clean up leaky underground storage tanks. The fund was only supposed to cover companies without private insurance to cover the cleanups.

Chevron had that type of insurance.

This is the first settlement reached between the state of Utah and oil companies accused of illegally tapped into the funding source.

The Utah Attorney General's office has filed similar claims against ConocoPhillips and BP Amoco.
