SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (ABC 4) - On Sunday, Utah German Americans and others came to Fort Douglas Cemetery to honor the 21 prisoners of war buried there. They are the graves of German prisoners from the World Wars I and II.
Every third Sunday of November, Germans mark the National Day of Mourning, which is similar to America's Memorial Day.
A German Air Force Captain and the liaison officer at Hill Air Force Base led the ceremony.
“The second World War was started by Nazi Germany and even this point this single point has to be remembered that there will be no war again and genocide, said Matthias Drees. “We are hoping that we and our future generations will not forget what happened in the past.”
