SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Utah County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deputy-involved shooting that happened in Millard County Monday night.
According to the Millard County Sheriff's Office, they received a report of a stolen vehicle Monday night at the Kanosh Paiute Indian Reservation. Police located the vehicle, as the driver then attempted to evade officers throughout paved and rugged off-road territory.
Deputies observed two occupants fleeing from the vehicle after it was apprehended near the foothills east of Kanosh. The suspects disregarded commands by deputies.
According to the Millard County Sheriff's office, a taser was deployed on 35-year-old Corey Kanosh before a physical altercation with a deputy led to Kanosh being fatally shot.
ABC 4 talked with the victim's friends and family. "They’re devastated. They are really hurt by what happened and we just want answers," said Rick Pikyavit who is a spokesman for the Corey Kanosh family.
Kanosh appears on the state sex offender registry over a 1999 conviction for attempted sexual exploitation of a minor.
The second suspect, 21-year-old Dana Harnes continued to flee and was arrested early Tuesday morning.
Officials say the deputy involved in the shooting was treated at a hospital for numerous injuries and released.
"Was Corey Kanosh a violent man?" asked ABC 4's Noah Bond. Rhonda Ward of knows him replied, "Corey was only violent I think when he became drunk."
ABC 4 brought this information to Kanosh Band Chairwoman Corrina Bow. She replied, "Corey is only like about 5'3" and the officer that was supposed to have shot him is like 6-something. So we’re wondering why he was even shot," Bow said.
Kanosh has a criminal history including eight felony charges including aggravated sexual abuse of a child, burglary and escaping from jail.
