SALT LAKE, Utah (ABC 4 News) - A candlelight vigil honoring Antonio Vasquez was held Thursday night at Jackson Park.

Vasquez was shot and killed by childhood friend, Mike Eugene Vigil, on July 28, 2012. Vigil was reportedly mad and pulled a gun on Vasquez and another friend, Lee Ortega.

“It was a senseless tragedy,” Jonnie Higley, a relative of Vasquez, said.

Family and friends showed their support by holding candles covered with a picture of Antonio at the memorial Thursday evening.

The father of the man who killed Vasquez showed up to the memorial and offered an apology.

The vigil brought many people to tears as they shared stories of Vasquez.

His mother, Sylvia, said Vasquez loved to write and was a good poet.

Vasquez was recently engaged to a woman named Carol. They moved into new house weeks ago.

“He was changing his life for the better,” Lety Guillen, a cousin, said. “He got with Carol. They loved each other a lot. You could see it in their eyes.”

Vasquez would have celebrated his 34th birthday on Saturday.
