Senator Orrin Hatch was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Penn. He received a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University in 1959 and law degree from The University of Pittsburgh in 1962, having worked his way through law school as a janitor and construction worker. Hatch worked as an attorney in Pittsburgh and Utah before running for the U.S. Senate in 1976. He has served on several Senate committees over 4 decades, and ran for president in 2000. Hatch is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a husband and father of six.

Scott Howell was born and raised in Utah. He attended Dixie State College on a football scholarship before attending the University of Utah, where he earned a bachelor's degree in political science. Howell also completed a year of study at Harvard, where he completed IBM certification. Howell worked as an IBM executive for 34 years, before entering politics as a Utah State Senator until 2011. Howell is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He is a husband and father of four.
