I am a well known student at Box Elder and not much will go around the school that I don't know about. This was not a drill there was talk about "Pulling a Connecticut" during the last hours of school on Friday. Based on the people it was coming from I figured it was a joke and told them not to joke about that. I am just glad that no one was hurt today and I am grateful that the local Police were able to scare off the possible gunman before he unloaded in the cafeteria that would have resulted in a major body count. I still think that it's not over and that this person might try again. Be safe, be aware, be careful my Box Elder Family.

I was teaching during Columbine. This happened all over the country following that tragedy as well. Immature, mentally ill people trying to scare others into thinking the same thing was happening. Could have been stupid kids just playing a prank....but I don't think anyone knows the traumatic effects this latest school shooting has had on our country. It's not about guns or god. It's about mental illness and not taking care of our own. It's about memorializing criminals. Promoting an uneducated culture of kids who think getting famous is as simple as getting pregnant or getting drunk on TV. We responded after Columbine by outlawing black trench coats in schools. My students could not even pray inside the building....they had to pray outside. We responded to the shoe bomber by making everyone in every airport across the country take off their shoes. But we do not know how to keep our children, families and friends safe at school, the mall, or. movie theaters? We need to get back to a culture of caring. Of responsibility. Of recognizing and stopping these things before they happen.
