SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) – A routine check turned into a tragedy for two bail bondsmen.
The owners of All Out Bail Bonds discovered Greg Peterson’s body lying in the bedroom of his cabin.
“It was a real bad deal that me and Brian my partner are going through,” says Steve Brown. "That's why we're kind of in shock with the whole deal."
The two bondsmen went to Peterson’s cabin late Tuesday when they made the discovery.
Peterson, who paid 10 percent of a two million dollar bond to get out of jail Friday was not returning calls. The former GOP fundraiser had spent months in jail after he was charged with multiple counts of raping women at his cabin.
The bail bondsmen were worried.
“The reason we went up to his place is because the battery on his ankle monitor, the GPS unit we had on him was running low on battery power," says Brian Cogburn.
When they got to the cabin, Peterson didn't answer the door. They searched outside his cabin before going inside.
Authorities say Peterson shot himself in the head.
“It's a horrific experience for anybody to have to see something like that,” says Cogburn.
Peterson met the two bondsmen before leaving the jail. And during that meeting, they say there were no indicators of trouble.
“If Brian and I would have thought that for one second we would never have even bailed him out,” says Brown.
