WEST VALLEY, Utah (ABC 4 News) - Ingredient labels on milk products could change.
Milk products with reduced calorie sweeteners must be clearly labeled in bold letters on the front of the container.
The International Dairy Foods Association and the National Milk Producers Federation want these bold labels to go away because when children see those labels they turn away. Kids are generally more interested in full flavored products.
The two milk organizations filed a petition with the Food and Drug Administration to ask the bold labels be removed.
ABC 4 talked with several people in Utah to gather opinions.
"I think it should be on the front too so people can know what they're buying," said Becky Hales from West Valley.
"I like it when it's out in the open so we can see what's there," said Brett Cecil from Logan.
"People have a right to know what's in their food," said James Hale from West Valley.
ABC 4 stopped by Winder Farms in West Valley to get the company's perspective. To be clear, it has nothing to do with this petition.
"We have a firm belief that consumers should be able to know exactly what they're purchasing and what they're ingesting," said company spokeswoman Aimee Winder.
You see this is all about selling to the consumer. Fewer of the low sugar labels would mean more sales to kids at school.
Winder Farm is also against removing the low cal sweetener labels on the front of bottles because it believes its products that good.
"Because our chocolate milk won first place at the Utah Dairy Expo we know people are going to want to drink our products no matter what," Winder said.
Even if the food and drug administration removes the low cal labels on the front of milk products they must be listed in the ingredients list on back.
