PROVO, Utah (ABC 4 Sports) - The Cougars are saying all the right things. They're saying that they're not looking past Weber State and ahead to next week's rivalry showdown with Utah, but there's no question they know who is on the schedule next.
"Oh, of course," said wide receiver Cody Hoffman. "I think everybody knows who's on the schedule next."
"Of course you're going to think about it a little bit," said linebacker Kyle Van Noy. "It's Utah. But at the same time, we have to think about what's best for the team, and that's this week's game."
"As a leader, I have to make sure we're not thinking about Utah," said quarterback Riley Nelson.
Still, BYU has more talent than Weber State at every single position, and should win easily. So how do they take the Wildcats seriously?
"I like to think about what Appalachian State did to Michigan," said running back Michael Alisa, referring to that historic upset in 2007. "Michigan let their guard down and look what happened to them. So we can't look past Weber State. They could sneak up on us."
"I'm not underestimating them in the least," added Nelson. "They present some challenges for us."
Besides, despite their dominating 30-6 season-opening victory over Washington State, BYU could have played much better, especially on offense. The Cougars were not able to capitalize on multiple trips into the red zone in the second half.
"We felt like we left 12, maybe 15 points out on the field," said Nelson. "So, we've got a lot to prove and a lot to get better at this Saturday."
Getting wide receiver Cody Hoffman back will help the offense. Hoffman missed most of the Washington State game with a leg contusion, but will be ready to play against the Wildcats.
"After getting treatment, I'm probably at about 90 percent," Hoffman said. "I'll definitely be ready for game time."
Weber State is coming off a 37-10 loss at Fresno State. This is the first time BYU and Weber State have played since 1979. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. Saturday at LaVell Edwards Stadium.
