Allgier asks to defend himself - again

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - An inmate facing a capital murder charge in the 2007 death of a Utah State Prison guard wants to represent himself.
Third District Court Judge Paul Maughan has scheduled a Sept. 11 hearing on the matter and set Curtis Allgier's trial to begin next April.
Allgier is represented by a pair of lawyers who were in court Wednesday arguing that the inmate needs to be unshackled in a conference room for a battery of psychological tests.
Prison authorities say Allgier is dangerous and shouldn't be unshackled outside his cell.
The judge says prosecutors have made reasonable proposals to accommodate testing.
Allgier has pleaded not guilty in the killing of Stephen Anderson. Authorities say the inmate grabbed the guard's gun and shot him during a medical visit outside of prison.
