However I have had poor experiences with law enforcement officers who bring their personal views into open carry I had a Officer Dana Pugmire from West Valley City who belittled me swore at me and felt it was perfectly okay IA shows I was right. With proper training with dispatchers and police officers you would see a big difference and a reduction of man with a gun calls. Police need to understand a open carrier is not a threat. A police officer needs to understand just because I am carrying a firearm I still have rights you need to respect. A police officer puts himself in a bad situation when he goes above and beyond his scope of the law. I will treat a Officer with respect who treats me with respect. I am not the problem remember I would gladly step in and assist you whenever the need would arise. I open carry daily on Trax and buses with no issues whatsoever I open carry in Salt Lake City with no problems and in West Valley City with very little problems. I have met the Governor several times Senators, Elected officials who have no issues all while open carrying. I have met several officers who respect open carry even went out to dinner with a Officer who wanted to learn more about citizen open carry. You state open carriers have very little training but personally feel training comes with gun ownership. Several times I question standards set forth with local police department with training. For example the West valley officer who shot at a moving car or the Salt lake officer who shot a individual leaving McDonald's We all need to work together police and citizens.

Correction to story: They stated that you can open-carry an "unloaded" firearm in 43 states. This statement is not complete. Where it is true it can carry unloaded, you can also carry it loaded in most states. Carrying unloaded is a bit pointless. Ask a Police office if he carries his unloaded. Police carry firearms for their protection, not for yours. I carry a gun because carrying a cop is hard on my back.

Speaking from a law enforcement (LE) point of view, the open carry law creates several problems for police officers. I respect the second ammendment, but I also appreciate common sense. In a post Columbine world where it's unfortunately common place to have mass public shootings, the general public expects LE to do what we can to prevent this. So when someone calls to report a "Man with a gun" call, we have a duty to respond and investigate. That is a call that ties up resoiurces. Multuple officers are usually dispatched. Most police departments require their officers to carry concealed off duty or in plain clothes so as not to cause alarm in public. If for some reason, it's not concealed, our badge is on our belt, right next to it, so we're properly identified. As far as training goes, I will concede that a small percentage of "civillians" who "live" at firing ranges may have more trigger time that the average police officer. But there's more to it than that. When & where NOT to shoot, is there an alternative to deadly force? Would a less lethal option be appropriate? John Q Citizen is not trained to make those split second decisions or usually doesn't have those options available to him/her. If someone wants to carry, be smart and carry legally concealed.

Im about as pro-gun as it gets and I think carrying openly just serves a point. either its Im prepared or I think im a bad a s s.. I personally dont see a reason to openly carrying a weapon it seems to me it would cause more issues.

Good for Utah! Keep that law on the books and put MORE laws like that in to play. It will make Utah the safest place to live! Believe that! It will also attract honest, hardworking, and honor driven people to Utah. And more business! All good things! Lower crime, better people, better economy. I see no bad in this.

I both conceal and open carry mine depending on where I am going and what the occasion is. I love to see people open carry. Because the facts and figures show that cities where more people are armed there is less violent crime. Those are the facts and no matter what Sackett says it doesn't change facts.
