SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - In the current economic climate of high unemployment people like Sheryl Provard are doing what they can to set themselves apart in a job interview. Provard has been working with Kim Harman, an interviewing expert, who is teaching her the most important thing anyone can do in an interview is, relax.
“When people are nervous in the interview, they know they are not qualified, and I have to have this job, there’s that tension. They pick up on the tension, and it’s kind of like they can’t wait until you’re gone,” warns Harman.
Step two is identify your passion, and figure out how it would help a future employer.
“I am the person you have been looking for this job, and I have this and this to offer,” coaches Harman.
Step three is do your homework on the company.
“I think you should talk more about what you could do for them. Focus on the good points of their company and why you would want to work for them,” says Harman.
Step four is practice interviewing.
“Dialogue that interview and anticipate that question,” says Harman.
Number 5 is stay positive.
“Interviewers are thinking, I can teach them what I want them to do, but I can’t make them come to me with the right attitude,” says Harman.
Having the right attitude, focusing on what you can bring to the company, and choosing a job you would love to do, helps build the confidence needed to be unforgettable.
Five tips for attracting your dream job are: relax, identify your passions, be the best candidate you can be, be willing to do your part, and be grateful.
