Utah to consider second radioactive waste dump

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The former president of the only low-level radioactive waste facility available to 36 states wants to open up a new disposal facility in Utah.
Charles Judd says EnergySolutions Inc.'s facility in Utah's west desert is running out of space and can't handle future waste from the decommissioning of nuclear power plants. He wants to build a new site on state lands about three miles off Interstate 80 in Tooele County.
An EnergySolutions spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment.
By building on state trust lands, Judd says the state's schools could reap a financial windfall.
But first he would have to get regulatory, legislative and gubernatorial approval.
Judd was scheduled to tell the state's Radiation Control Board about his proposal Tuesday.
