Utah school districts get option to cut school days

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The State Board of Education have given school districts permission to cancel school days to save money.
Districts will now be allowed to eliminate up to five regular school days from the 2010 school year due to budget woes. But districts will have to cut three quality teaching days - where teachers come to school to work but students don't attend - before they can cut regular school days.
The board gave approval to the proposal in a 10-5 vote last week.
Board member Carol Murphy voted against the plan, saying it gives districts the option to close schools for up to eight days total.
Districts and charter schools don't need the board's approval to eliminate the teacher quality days.
