SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A Utah state legislator is comparing the Federal Government to swindler Bernie Madoff and actually accusing the Feds of running a Ponzi scheme.
This jaw dropping comment came during a sharp Capitol exchange Monday.
The lawmakers had been debating the merits of Senate Concurrent Resolution 3.
This resolution reminds the U.S. Government about the 10th Amendment, an amendment dealing with the limits of federal power.
Towards the end of the debate, Senator Mark Madsen essentially said Uncle Sam is a swindler.
Madsen said, "The fault lies with the National Government that has set up a scheme worthy of Bernie Madoff."
Bernie Madoff - for those who have forgotten - ran, perhaps, the biggest Ponzi scheme in history.
He bilked investors out of billions of dollars and was sentenced to 150 years in prison.
Senator Madsen went on to say, "That kind of inter-generational Ponzi scheme is a disgrace and it's the fault of the National Government."
And with that, Resolution 3 passed.
Later, though, even the measure's sponsor was scratching his head about Madsen and Madoff.
ABC 4 asked, "One of the senators compared the Federal Government to kind of a Ponzi scheme and Madoff. Do you agree with that?
Sen. Stuart Adams replied, “I am not sure what he was talking about."
