SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - Beginning Monday East High School Students will be charged $5 for being late to class. If the students are late and do not want to pay the fee they have the option of attending 30 minutes of after school detention.

It is up to the discretion of the teachers to determine whether or not the student is tardy or truant.  If a student is late but has a good excuse they will be marked as tardy.  If they are extremely late with no excuse the teacher will mark them truant, and they will have to pay the fine or go to detention.

"What I have notices as an administrator is students aren't lingering anymore in the hallways," said  Principle Paul Sagers, "They aren't stopping and talking, there's not enough time. They just want to get to class."

School officials say the money raised will go towards paying the teacher who has to stay after school and run the detention.

Sure it's a great idea- Yeah, do you really think the students, who by the way are minors, are going to pay for the fee? No, the parents will be the ones paying. Great going for all of you who think this is a good idea. I don't even have children and I don't agree with this. There is absolutely NO WAY that I would pay for my child being tardy. And by the way who is it actually funding?

It would seem that a teacher would have more productive items to concern himself with than whether or not a student is tardy to class.

and to all of you who say ya its a good idea, like the person right below my comments, come to my school, you will realize some students classes are on seperate sides of the school and takes a while to swim through all the other students rushing to get to class, someother times teachers will stop to talk to them, counclers as well. to be honest when i think about the fact if im late ill get charged, ill just not go and say forget it, im not going to go if this is how the system will be i put up with your insane policies enough as it is. and in my case i wake up early to get to school at six in the morning to get those teachers announcments out and this is how were treated, with fines, im already in enough debt, last thing i need is a rising school fine, ive seen fine lists that rack all the way up to 500$ and more, so shame on you that think this new punishment is a good idea

no its not a great idea, im the producer of the broadcasting class at EHS meaning i run an entire class and have to make sure each and every student is doing their job right, and on some occasions im stuck in the studio for a long time or out running to stores to pick up materials for the class cause the district takes a god awefull time to do stuff and that makes me late by a few minutes even seconds depending on the teacher. and its not just when your late, when you have your cell phone out to check the time or send a urget text or to turn it off, sleeping, speaking out, it could be your looking out the window (happened to my buddie)some days the teacher is just moody and picks on that student. teachers will use this as a way to attack a student. and to take 30 minutes out of my day considering what i do is a huge hassel due to strict policies of students cant be in a room with out adult supervision. i rather not make, paying the five dollars not a big problem to me ( oh and sometimes teachers write you up and sign it for you meaning 5 days later you get a note saying you now owe the school 15$ cause you didnt pay or go to detention) cause i work as well. but for those whose parents dont help them, dont have jobs, dont have homes or dont live at home, wana take a class off cause they are over worked and need a breather; but still come to school cant afford that, i even think the drop out rate will increase after this year. this new punishment is like most would think a greedy ill thought attack on students, causing one more unneeded costly stress factor

Great idea! At least someone gets the picture. Lateness can play havoc on a business as well. Lets catch them early! http://www.cheryllynninternational.com Regards, Cheryl

I totally agree with this policy! East is not the only school in the valley implimenting a policy like this. I have actually studied this policy very carefully and the students are not automatically charged for the tardy. A student has the option to serve the detention within 5 days (that's quite the grace period) or if they would rather pay the $5, they can do that instead. A student is charged once they do not show up to serve their detention because they are truant from that detention. Pretty simple I think, show up on time, you're good! Late, you have a consequence! Just like a grown up with a job (isn't that what we're teaching them to be? a grown up) if you're on time to work, you're good! If you're late to work, you are penalized, sometimes even fired!

I love it!!! I think there should be a system though such as if your late the first time then it should just be a warning. The second time it is a $1 fine, and the third and fourth time it is a $5 fine and a dentention. If you are late a f...ifth time then it is a $25 fine, a weeks worth of dententions, your parents get called to the school for a meeting, and academic suspension if your on a sports team or other organization. There is no excuse for being late. There is plenty of time in between classes to get to your locker and to your next class, you just have to know how to plan accordingly. When I was in high school we had 6 minutes to get from one class to the next and I was never late, even had time to chit chat with my friends but we did it as we walked instead of standing in the middle of the hall and blocking the way for everyone else. I even agree with giving the money to the teacher who has to stay after school to watch those kids in detention. That is time out of the teachers day that they could be spending with their own family instead of with a bunch of kids who don't understand time management and what it means to be responsibile for your own actions. I wish that they would enforce this here in VA, would be nice!

@5Wands...you mistake the latter part of that paragraph as being directed specifically to @belly58. I said nothing about them failing as a parent. I'm sure you'll notice upon reading again that statements made directly to them were about my bet on the response, verbal or not, of their child if questioned about repeated tardiness. "For anyone dealing with a repeatedly truant child" is clearly a target audience, set up as the addressee for subsequent sentences. But thanks for your banter anyway.
