SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - A musical based on Mormonism by the creators of Comedy Central's animated series South Park is set to open Off-Broadway during the 2010-2011 season.

'Mormon Musical' will be a satirical play created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone based on the loves and lives of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to a July 2009 article in the New York Post.

Broadway actor Cheyenne Jackson will reportedly play an LDS missionary, and other stars will likely make appearances in the musical, according to the Post article.

A Variety.com article says the show will run sometime between August and September, and that the play "...has potential to stir controversy thanks to its nothing's-sacred comic take on Mormonism."

South Park has often poked fun at LDS culture and beliefs, including the depiction of Joseph Smith as a superhero in one episode, and suggesting that only Mormons would make it to heaven in other installments. One South Park episode is entitled "All About Mormons," offering a cynical look at early LDS history.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have poked fun at Mormons before on the big screen with 1997's Orgazmo, the story of an LDS missionary who becomes a porn-star superhero.

Thanks jeremyTron for pointing out specific cases. I stepped away to come back and find someone was kind enough to do the research already.

phoenix and Kessee...it's obvious you have never seen South Park, Orgazmo, Team America or any of their other work. Which is fine, to each their own and everyone has their own tastes in TV/Film/Stage entertainment. The problem is you both don't realize THEY ALREADY HAVE. Trey and Matt have take on hundreds of controversial and taboo topics over the years in politics, religion, sex, race and social dogmas. Your suggestions are in that list. In over a decade they've managed to probably insult everyone on the planet, including me. So, since I'm assuming at least one of you is Mormon, don't feel as if you're being singled out. They've already poked fun of every other idiot out there too. If you don't have a good sense of humor to allow them the political satire and commentary they are so good at, watch something else and don't see the musical. It's a simple and straight forward solution.

That just sounds stupid to me. Don't they have anything better to do than criticize someone else's religion? Why don't they focus on some real issues we have today such as immigration or terrorism.

Yawn. As soon as these two get the guts to focus on Mohammed and Islam then I might be interested. But they are too weak and wouldn't dare.

How funny! Maybe someone will do an accurate depiction of the Mormon faith; a bunch of lies and unbelievable crap. I would pay to see it the show come to Utah.
