SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The strong backlash against the LDS Church over Proposition 8 is taking a new twist. LDS members - sometimes whole LDS families - say they are now leaving the Church because of its opposition to same-sex marriage.

On just one anti-prop 8 website, they reportedly number in the hundreds. Some say they've already resigned; others are apparently about to.

Linda Stay from St. George is one of those resigning from the LDS Church, and is doing so because the Church opposes gay marriage, like the one her son Tyler is in.

Andrew Callahan, a LDS member who has been very vocal speaking out against Prop 8, told ABC 4, "It's very clear to me that many, many people are resigning over this gay marriage issue and the Church's involvement in it."

Now, the last time Utah saw Andrew Callahan, he was delivering anti-Prop 8 petitions to the LDS Church in October, but now, on Callahan's website, “Signing for Something,” there is a new section.

It's reserved for those resigning from or leaving the LDS Church.

And Callahan tells the story of one heartbroken LDS woman in California.

"She doesn't want to be associated with the bigotry and she doesn't want, in any way, to be responsible for teaching the young children to be bigots," said Callahan.

Callahan estimates on his website he's heard from hundreds of resigned or resigning LDS members.

This includes not just Linda Stay but also nine other members of her family.

Callahan also says it includes his 16-year-old daughter but not yet him.

He says, "I am disgusted as everyone else, but, because they asked me to resign, I don't want them to feel they got what they wanted."

And Callahan's website also includes a link to something called mormonnomore.com.

This site includes step by step instructions for leaving the LDS faith.

Now, perhaps, some of the LDS members leaving the church would have done so anyway, but Callahan says since the Salt Lake Temple protest Friday, more than 200 LDS members on his website have made it clear they're now resigning as well.

Denouncing a religion that teaches that your children are abhorrent in the eyes of god, and that denies that child happiness and fulfillment in this life and the next based SOLELY on who he/she chooses to love is what any rational, feeling, courageous human being would do. Staying in a religion founded by an adulterer, child molester, con-artist, and fraud, now THAT is ridiculous.

I feel that resigning your religious beliefs because you fear your children will be offended is ridiculous. I find it funny that Linda decided to resign because her son decided he was gay.....A constant need for your child's approval is not a reason to denounce your religion.

Well if God placed Adam with Steve, none of us would be here to debate about it.

So if homosexuality is a sin based on the bible teachings, is incest ok? Seeing as how Adam and Eve's had to populate the earth there were brothers and sisters having kids together. God is ok with that? So is your [LDS]church ok with that?

Captain Moroni, let me take a shot at your request. I give this as my opinion. Paul in this letter seems to give the impression that he has "graduated" from the law of Moses. He teaches that he is no longer under that law and that he is free to eat and drink what he wants to rather than holding to the incredible number of proscriptions that the Jews had added to the "law" over a couple of thousand years. He uses the foods as an example, saying that if he is invited to eat with others and he desires to go, he can eat freely of what is provided. On the other hand, he says that even though all things (to eat) are lawful, not all things are expedient. He cites food offered to idols as something he would not eat even though he is no longer bound by "the law". Now go to verse 29 of the next chapter concerning the sacrament. "For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body." It doesn't seem in context to say that there is no law and no punishment if you are doing things unapproved of by God - quite the opposite. He is simply saying that the thousands of rabbinical rules added to God's simple commandments were no longer binding upon him because of his conversion to Christ. Section 134 is a call to live by the laws of the country you are in as good citizens. This is good advice for us all but, in the context of all the scriptures, it is clear that there are times to oppose and even disobey the law. Daniel refused to bow down to anyone but God and was thrown into the lions den. The founders of our country disobeyed their English King and the Doctrine and Covenants describes them as men raised up by God to do what they did. We just have to be sure that, if we choose disobedience, we are doing it for reasons God would agree with and not because of our own ideas. Of course if we are not committed to God, none of the above is valid. That is the bottom line as I see it. I hope that helps.

And so it begins again. Those that live in the great and spacious building point their fingers at those who hold to the iron rod and mock them. Some hold on - some are embarrased and wander away. It is sad for those who wander off. We hope they will find their way back, but to do so they will have to understand that what others want will not change the mind of God. As the world falls deeper into error and sin, the LDS church and others which insist that there is wrong and right, not just areas of grey, will be persecuted and pay a price for standing for what they believe. The separation of the wicked and the righteous will continue until all the prophecies are fulfilled. When Christ returns, he will love all of us sinners, but He won't condone what we do if it is against what He has taught us is true.

modespud - I appreciate your comments and I also appreciate your point of view. I also appreciate what appears to be a real attempt to look at both sides - I find that lacking in a lot of religious people particularly those that grew up in the same faith they are in currently. The world needs more religious people like you. I can honestly say that I spent years and year trying to find ways to convince myself that mormonism was true. I was a very good mormon kid and very active in the church growing up. I prayed and prayed and prayed and was more and more reassured that Mormonism wasn't true. It would have been far easier for me to "go with the flow" and stay in the church. It would have saved a lot of pain for me and my family and we'd be much closer today because of it. But for me, I was so overwhelming convinced spiritually, academically and emotionally that Mormonism wasn't correct that I had to leave and stand for what I knew to be right. Truth is truth and I'm as convinced and as educated on the subject as you are. It's okay that we disagree. For a subset of the world population Mormonism provides a great deal of happiness, satisfaction, community, and peace - and for these people I'm truly happy. While I do believe in God I don't think any religion is "true" and most do more harm than good. Most every war fought in the history of this world has been over religion and forcing other to comply with something they disagree. It's easy for the organization to say it's not us, that's over zealous members behaving badly. But the truth of the matter is they are responsible. This is a clear and early example. The LDS church overstepped its role and coerced it's members to participate in an ugly "war" on gay people's rights in the name of God. That makes them responsible. If it just kept it's religion confined to it's members and spiritual matters and allowed for it's membership to think freely without retaliation I'd have no issue.
